The Bengals (13-12, 4-5 SW) got a record 10th home run from sophomore Kris Bryant and two triples from Tomo Delp in routing Clark. Bryant drove in four and also doubled while Chasen Shreve and Axel Johnson (2-for-3, 3 RBI) both doubled. Jordan Hanley added a triple of his own and Bonanza stole six bases.
Mario Franzese went the distance, allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings. He also struck out five in a solid performance, his first since being hit in the ankle with a line drive against Bishop Gorman two weeks ago.
EXTRA INNINGS – With just three league games remaining in the season, the Bengals pull into a virtual tie with Durango for the fourth-and-final playoff spot. Durango plays host to Spring Valley this Thursday night in a game with major playoff implications as the Bengals host Bishop Gorman and travel to Western Friday while Durango plays at Gorman to end the season.
A win by third-place Spring Valley Thursday night would make next week's Wednesday night showdown with Durango a virtual play-in game for both the Bengals and the Trailblazers. This is, of course, barring an upset of Bishop Gorman (26-1) by either the Bengals or Durango – which both still have one more game with the nationally-ranked power. Bonanza also still needs to close out the season with a win at Western, which the Bengals bested 11-3 last week.
A win by Durango over Spring Valley Thursday night would make next Wednesday night's game practically a 'play-in game' to earn a play-in game for the Bengals, who would then possibly meeting the following Saturday for a playoff berth if the Bonanza wins and then closes out the season with a win over Western.
Durango currently holds the tiebreaker after winning the first match-up between the two teams so a Bengals win would earn them the split, hence the tiebreaker. Bonanza's 5-2 win over Spring Valley last week looms large as Durango plays host to the Grizzlies Thursday night at 6 p.m. It will be the second match-up between the two teams after Spring Valley bested the Blazers 11-5 April 4th.
