Offense erupts in blowout win over Foothill

The Bengals (1-2) got a dominant performance on the mound from 6-foot-4 sophomore David Pettis, who picked up his first win of the season after being the tough luck loser Saturday.
"We've been waiting for this kind of game from our guys,” Bonanza coach Derek Stafford
said. “We jumped on them early and didn't look back. We played well in all three facets of the game today and the results were what should be expected. We were simply playing nervous in the first two games but all it took was a big sophomore to step it up for us on the mound to right the ship.”
Pettis went five strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits and two walks in collecting his first varsity win. He also struck out five hitters, including all three to close out the five-inning, mercy-rule victory.
Pettis got run support from seniors Philip Navarro and Jordan Hanley. Navarro finished 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI while Hanley was 2-for-4 with a 3-run home run and two runs scored. Senior Nick Bryant (2-for-3) doubled in a run and Mario Franzese also drove in a run with a bloop single.
"We got some solid run support and then David started cruising," Stafford said. "We needed this first one so we can relax and play our brand of baseball. If we hit like we did today, this is going to be a fun season. We need to continue to progress in all three facets of the game and, if we do, we're going to go to war when league rolls around."
Bonanza returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to Cimarron-Memorial at 3:30 p.m. in a neighborhood battle against the Spartans.
