Control issues haunt Bengals in 7-3 loss to Centennial
BOXSCORE
(March 12, 2008)
– Five walks and five wild pitches in the first two winnings spelled doom for
Bonanza’s baseball team Wednesday as the Bengals fell on the road to
Centennial, 7-3.
The loss, which kept Bonanza (2-3) winless on the road,
dampened a solid day at the plate for seniors Chasen Shreve and Nick Bryant,
who combined for five hits and two extra base hits.
"Our starter didn’t get it done on the mound,” head coach
Derek Stafford said. “When you throw more balls than
strikes, you can’t expect to have very much success. We scored first and then
gave it back to them and then some. We’ve had control issues on the mound in
all three of our losses.”
Senior Jordan Hanley (0-1) got the loss, throwing just 1 1/3
innings while allowing three hits, five runs – four of which were earned – with
five walks and five wild pitches. Junior Josh Wells stopped the bleeding in
relief but it was too little, too late. Wells went 4 2/3 innings and allowed
just two earned runs on three hits.
Shreve was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI while Bryant was
2-for-3 for the Bengals, who return to action at home Thursday against
neighborhood rival, Palo Verde. Bonanza out-hit Centennial but left seven
runners on base and failed to get the big hit with runners on base.
“Most of the time, it’s the big hits that win games and
today, we didn’t get any,” Stafford said. “We’re very
‘Jekyll and Hyde’ right now and we’re going to have to start mixing things up
so we can get a consistent effort from our starters.”
The Bengals welcome Palo Verde for a 3:30 p.m. start, shooting for their third consecutive home
win to start the season. Shreve will take the mound for Bonanza as it looks to
return to the .500 mark.
