The Bengals (3-3), who are unbeaten at home this year, got three extra base hits from Shreve and six solid innings on the mound en route to besting the Panthers.
“Chasen really showed his guts in the ballgame,” coach Derek Stafford said. “He battled on the mound and was completely locked in at the plate. Our seniors picked us up today at the plate and we managed to pick up the win.”
The Bengals needed a little drama in getting the victory after Palo Verde tied up the game in the top of the seventh with three manufactured runs. Shreve then hit a one-out double before Bryant and Philip Navarro were hit by pitches leading to Delp’s deep fly ball to win it.
Shreve was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI while Bryant was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and a pair of RBI. Sophomore Kris Bryant was 2-for-4 with an double and an RBI to help the Bengals and Chris Antoku also added a pair of hits an RBI in the win.
David Pettis (2-1) picked up the win on the mound, going one inning and not allowing an earned run. Shreve went six strong, allowing just three earned runs and working out of a near-disastrous top of the second, in which Bonanza committed three errors and six unearned runs.
“We didn’t give him much help in the second inning,”
