Bengals struggle in first weekend of the season

(March 13, 2011) — Bonanza's baseball team showed its youth over the weekend, dropping a pair of tough losses to Northwest Division foes Arbor View and Palo Verde.
The Bengals (0-3) scored nine first-inning runs at Arbor View on Friday, but the Aggies (2-1) battled back and slowly ate into the lead before finally overtaking Bonanza in the bottom of the fourth inning with seven runs. Bonanza committed five errors and allowed 10 unearned runs despite scoring 13 runs against a solid pitching staff.
Sophomore Jack Orozco was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while fellow sophomore Sean DeSoto added a triple and four RBI. Travis Ming, also a sophomore, was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.
The Bengals returned to action Saturday in a complete flip-flop from the previous game as the bats went silent against Palo Verde, 3-1.
Ming doubled late and the Bengals had a few chances to score but each rally was turned away by Palo. Sophomore Adam Merino went five strong innings, allowing just three runs and four hits while striking out two. The Bengals return to action Monday afternoon at home against Liberty.
