Disastrous fifth innings costs Bengals league opener

    BOXSCORE

(March 27, 2008)– With a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Bonanza's baseball team looked as if it were in the driver's seat on the road in the league opener against Spring Valley.

But four errors and six runs later, the Bengals found themselves on the losing end, falling to league rival Spring Valley, 7-4, thanks to the 6-run fifth. The loss wasted a tremendous effort on the mound from senior Chasen Shreve, who struck out seven and walked just one.

"We gave that one away," coach Derek Stafford said. "We were rolling along and then the wheels just came off. In our division, if you stumble for a second, the other team will take advantage. We stumbled and Spring Valley did just that."

Senior Tomo Delp belted a two-run home run and sophomore Eddie Orozsco added a two-run double for the Bengals, who led 4-1 after three innings despite just three hits.
